LEARN TO SAIL

Level One - Start Sailing

Our course is aimed at 9 – 13-year-olds and follows the Yachting New Zealand 'Start Sailing' course. 

The course will cover a range of subjects, including water safety, names of boat parts, setting up boats, capsizing, launching and retrieving, tacking, gybing, points of sail and basic knots 

The course provides Plastic Optimist designed especially for learning and these courses include buoyancy aids and facilities.​

Our coaches are all qualified to Learn to Sail Coaches and run highly effective, well-managed courses.

​On successful completion of the course the sailor will have achieved Level One of the YNZ Learn to Sail framework, which is nationally recognised. You will then be given the opportunity to carry on your sailing with Learn to Sail Level 2

Age: For kids aged 9-13yrs with no or very little sailing experience

Time:  9am to 12pm every Sunday of Term 4 

Dates:  Starting October 13th for 8 weeks - Excluding public holiday weekends. 

Cost: $100 NPCL Club Membership + $280 Course Cost.

JUNIOR SAILING

Green Fleet & Junior Sailing

For sailors with their own boat & gear who have completed a Learn to Sail program

Our Green, Open fleet and junior sailing is for those who can independently get themselves around a basic course, from here they will follow the Yachting New Zealand Learn to Race course which teaches them more about how to make their boats go fast, taking care of their new boat, boat handling and the racing rules of sailing. 

There will also be multiple opportunities throughout the season for these sailors to head away to regattas with coach support 

Time: Saturday mornings 9 am - 12 noon during the Sailing Season, Saturday afternoon club racing and weekday afternoon training (Optional)  (October - April)

Cost: $100 NPCL Junior Club Membership + TBA- covers all weekend coaching for the season 


More information: The Club has an active coaching programme, especially in dinghy classes, for more advanced racing sailors wishing to develop racing and boat handling skills. Contact sailing@navalpoint.co.nz for more information.

Rescue boat training - Free one day course to become certified to operate our rescue boats during coached sessions & regattas.

Adult Keelboat sailing - Learn2Sail runs their courses from Naval Point Club

Offshore Sailor Safety Awareness Events - in conjunction with local safety specialists.

  • Provisioning
  • Understanding of the requirements for Cat 1 to Cat 5 certification

Coastguard Boating Education

  •  The Club supports the excellent safety and formal coastal and offshore courses offered by Coastguard Boating Education by recommending that members gain appropriate offshore qualifications and knowledge. 

Crewing on someone else's boat

  • A good way to learn more is to crew on someone else's boat. The Club runs a Crew List for people wanting experience on another boat.
