Sustainability
At our club, we are committed to promoting sustainability and minimizing our environmental impact. We recognize that our operations and activities impact the natural world and are dedicated to taking responsible and proactive measures to reduce this impact. To achieve our sustainability goals, we have implemented several initiatives, including:
Waste reduction and recycling:
We have implemented a comprehensive recycling program to reduce waste and encourage members to dispose of their Waste properly. We also use reusable cups, plates, and utensils to reduce the amount of single-use plastic. Any single-use product is biodegradable.
As a club we use paperless methods for communication with members. We communicate through email, newsletters, or text to all club members.
Our green waste to local pigs.
Energy conservation: We are taking steps to reduce our energy consumption by using energy-efficient lighting and appliances and implementing practices to reduce our energy usage.
Water conservation:
We promote responsible water use by installing low-flow fixtures, maintaining efficient irrigation systems, and educating our members on the importance of water conservation.
We do offer permanent water refill stations.
Environmental education:
We provide educational opportunities to our members and local community to increase awareness and knowledge of environmental issues, including marine conservation, climate change, and sustainable practices.
We run RUNA days at the club for any school or organization to come learn to sail.
In 2024 we were part of “Know Your Place” that brought attention and knowledge to the community about the Korora/White Flippered Penguins.
Dr. Joyce Yeager is a marine biologist studying the invertebrates that live on jetties, Marianas, and floaters around Banks Peninsula. We have installed a “invertebrate hotel” that is part of this research.
Resource Conservation and Community Outreach:
We have started repurposing old sails into bags and blankets to fundraise for our club and the sea scouts.
In 2023 Naval Point Club Lyttelton started offering Seasick Sunscreen. This sunscreen is SPC certified and made with just 7 naturally derived ingredients.
Green boating practices:
We encourage our members to practice responsible boating by reducing their speed, avoiding sensitive habitats, and properly disposing of their waste.
Naval Point Club Lyttelton has a dedicated haulout yard. In this yard we monitor all repairs and maintenance to ensure best practices.
We believe that sustainability is an ongoing process, and we are committed to continually improving our practices and reducing our environmental impact. By working together, we can create a more sustainable future for our yacht club and future generations.
